The beacon monitoring system
The system for monitoring distress beacons is made up of the Cospas-Sarsat
system that tracks distress beacons using satellites and the use of
aircraft
listening on the aviation distress frequency of 121.5 MHz. All 406 MHz
beacons in Australia also transmit a signal on 121.5 MHz used for homing
by the search aircraft. Information on beacon alerts is all passed to
RCC Australia where it is analysed and a Search and Rescue (SAR) operation
coordinated.
This section highlights important changes
being made to the system in 2009 and explains the history
and workings of the Cospas-Sarsat system.
