Revised AS/NZ Standard for 406 MHz Distress Beacons
The revised AS/NZ Standards 4280.1:2003 and 4280.2:2003 covering 406
MHz EPIRBs and PLBs were published on 7 November 2003. The Standards are

4280.1:2003 includes amendments introducing an Australian Class 3 EPIRB
that changes the switching arrangements from a water activated switch
to an ON/OFF arrangement similar to that used in the 121.5 MHz EPIRBs
the beacons are designed to replace. It also makes the provision of a
strobe on Class 3 EPIRBs optional.
These changes have been made to encourage the development of a less costly
EPIRB and could see the introduction of a beacon on the market at less
than half the current cost of a Class 1 or 2 EPIRB.
