Lithium batteries are inherently dangerous if not completely discharged. A beacon that has reached its battery replacement date will still have charge in the battery.
Batteries should be handled carefully and not subjected to flame or cutting tools.
Be careful not to short circuit the battery terminals as rapid discharge of Lithium batteries can result in overheating of the batteries, rupture and even explosion.

GME has discontinued the manufacture of the MT250 EPIRB. Cylindrical in shape, this beacon has a cap that is very tightly screwed on and owners may find difficulty in gaining access to the electronics and batteries. It is recommended that this beacon be taken to your closest Battery World outlet and placed in the collection box or disposed of at collection points advised on your local State Marine Safety Authority Website. If you are able to gain access to the beacon it can be disarmed by unclipping the wires that run to the battery.
